As of October 8th, the Nobel Prize in Literature and the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine have been announced. The award for physiology and medicine is the first of the Nobel Prizes to be handed out this year, and this prize will be shared by Michael Houghton, from the United Kingdom, and Harvey J. Alter and Charles M. Rice, from United Stateds who all made notable contributions toward the discovery of the blood-borne virus that causeschronic① liver problems. The Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institute, which is the Stockholm-based body that oversees the awards, said “The discovery of hepatitis C virus revealed the cause of the remaining cases of chronic hepatitis and made possible blood tests and new medicines that have saved millions of lives.” This year’s Nobel Prize for Literature has been awarded to the US poet Louise Glück on October 8th. Glück was recognised for “her unmistakable poetic voice, that with austere② beauty makes individual existence universal” said the Swedish Academy, which oversees the award. The chair of the Nobel prize committee, Anders Olsson, also praised the poet’s “candid③ and uncompromising” voice, which is “full of humour and biting wit” and compared her with Emily Dickinson with her “severity and unwillingness to accept simple tenets of faith”. This year's Nobel laureates④ will join a televised award ceremony due to the pandemic.（China Daily & BBC）
